Uncaged

Pictures taken from the internet

Tame my soul, you tried—

Tame my spirit too,

Tame me to your small cage,

But my spirit flies free.

Tame me, you tried—

Tame the books, tame the rooms,

Tame me, you will try again.

The world was worried I might suffocate it with glee.

Eve was named and burdened with sin.

Jocasta had a name yet was bound to fate.

And Aristotle—ah, his words endure,

But she, silent, erased—

Yet how did they procreate?

They erased my name,

Pushed me to the margins of the Holy Book.

But behold Mary Magdalene—

Two millennia, yet still she speaks her truth.

They erased my name,

So, I lived behind a pseudonym—

Yet behold T.S. Eliot, behold Karen Blixen.

And then there is me,

Subdued in deceit,

Taught to despise my own reflection,

To make my own nemesis.

Fellow woman,

You are strong, you are witty, you are formidable.

Choose today—

To lift, not break, to stand, not silence.

See how the world mocks women still,

How Kawira was cast aside,

How Kihika must fight for her Spade.

Dear woman,

Stand for your sister today.

Dear Reader,

I continue to savour the formidable spirit of every woman this month of March. Always remember, you are strong, you are witty and you have all it takes to take your place in the world.

Recently, Kawira Mwangaza was impeached, Susan Kihika is on the verge of the same. Do you think these are justified or are they gender driven? Do you believe their male counterparts are genuinely doing better?

    2. I also know that others are underperforming and facing genuine leadership issues. But once accountability is demanded from them, they pull a joker card. It turns to gender- women issue. Is it time we also accept that the 'women-gender' issue is being misused?

  2. Women leaders must remain unbowed and stand tall, no matter the political betrayals and humiliations they face. Uncaged is a powerful reminder that history has tried to silence women, erase their names, and push them to the margins but they rise, time and again.
Essy you reminds us today to choose to lift, not break; to stand, not silence. Women must support each other and refuse to be caged.

  4. I honestly believe that some women are hunted out of office just because they are women. This should be fought by all in order to have a balanced society.

  10. A great piece of poetry. I believe women can fight the stereotypical attacks by excellent performance. There great women who have established standards that are beyond reproach the likes og Wangari Maathai,Margaret Nyakango,Sarah Serem etc. The challenge with gender card is women fight for equality as opposed to a fight for equity. On the contrary men should never fight women but support the to excel.

  14. While some of the allegations against Mwangaza and Kihika may be legitimate, the selective and aggressive manner in which female governors are targeted suggests that gender plays a role. Kenya still struggles with entrenched patriarchal politics, making it more challenging for women to navigate leadership positions. Still male politician are still in office besides more worse things they have done in office. So I'm in your side in this.
