FIFTY SHILLINGS DU JOUR

Is fifty Kenya Shillings

Embedded with Midas touch?

Fifty shillings,

Might sound trivial, and menial and mundane

Not big money,

Hardly buys a hanky

You come by it easily

And goes swiftly

Like hail stones

And so you think

I who speak

Down from the abyss

Cherished yet annexed

And why wouldn’t I?

Pry to be so harsh

Who in want of myrrh

To my body anoint.

So I ask

What is the fifty shilling du jour?

 

Fifty Kenya shillings

Smothered me

Smoldered me

Scattered me

Into the pieces that I am.

The wreckage of the taxi

At the back written voxy

In shape of boxy

Cruised in too much haste

And carried too many

And the breaks worn empty

Came by the guy

Who commanded with a sigh;

Quick!  He stopped 

The driver with one eye

Handed the license

Hiding the nuisance

Of faults innumerable

From the one eyed guy

To the uniformed guy

Dropped the billion ducats

We, valued as cats

Hired to die

For just

Fifty Kenya shillings

Thus I am no more

And thousands before

For just

Fifty Kenya shillings

 

How many more shaken to the core

Shall have to implore

So you Mr. mighty

Can lynch the culture

Of fifty Kenya shillings?

For,

What is the fifty shilling du jour?

 

May this awaken

As my kin are shaken

The Mighty’s mien

To stop the Midas touch

In fifty Kenya shillings.

Dear Bestie, My memory belches unpleasant evocations strenuously entered into its reserves. I recall for instance, the snake bite of my aunt, how frightful it must have been for her. I recall my mother’s painful strokes, an astute testifier of using canes on kids, aha! I recall my athletic cousin who duped us into emptying our pockets, only to vanish in the prodigal son’s manner. I recall my step mother, locking up the corn stores so that we starved in my Dad’s absence. I recall my aunt’s disappearance after facing the sharp knife that would end her education. Dear bestie Two decades are gone since we went into this teaching-ache. I don’t know about you but, I have seen it all, my head aches. I have watched them gain and lose, their height, weight, teeth. I have seen them fall in and out of love, such doves getting hit. I have amusedly watched the shock on their faces when hit by changes. These changes are cruelly fast, some are painfully slow, tight hinges… These I have witnessed, laughed and cried, worried and tired. Not all wonderful though, the girls without Fathers….
