At thirty-Six 



The man, the shepherd, the priest; so gentle, never raised his fist. 

Stands taller than most, but not with without cost 

On his chest hangs a silver cross, a long-term consort of his.

Be not beguiled, for he seems glamorous, in the laces of Rome. 

His heart has been broken, into thirty-six thousand pieces, 

Yet holding on to the cross for solace, he grapples on. 

His faith has been interrogated, into thirty-six thousand shreds of doubt,

Yet holding on to the Holy cross for solace, he grapples on. 

His actions have been scrutinized, in lenses multiples of thirty- six, 

Yet holding on to the cross for solace, he grapples on. 

His nights have sometimes dragged, lonely and lengthy hours seeming like thirty-six,

Yet holding on to the cross for solace, he grapples on. 

His dreams have been thwarted, voices of intimidation far beyond thousands of thirty-sixes, 

Yet holding on to the cross for solace, he grapples on.

His encounters amidst four Popes, having to adjust to change thirty-six times too!

So the man, the shepherd, the priest, fasts alone and feasts with us. 

Because he has found joy in the Gracious Cross, the tree of life. 

At thirty-six, we celebrate his sweet pain and his dry sweat. 

We celebrate the martyr whose blood has been shed inwards.

My Lord gazes profoundly, a hue of tenderness,           Usually our glances penetrate each other, I deeply gulp.  But this day, shame dwarfs my uncanniness, So that I come reluctant as a dirge I come anyways Lord, lame as me.  I might be filthy, swarmed in grit,  I might be distraught, burdened with regret, I might be violent, me judging me.  For not breaking the bad, but could I ? Dear Bestie, My memory belches unpleasant evocations strenuously entered into its reserves. I recall for instance, the snake bite of my aunt, how frightful it must have been for her. I recall my mother’s painful strokes, an astute testifier of using canes on kids, aha! I recall my athletic cousin who duped us into emptying our pockets, only to vanish in the prodigal son’s manner. I recall my step mother, locking up the corn stores so that we starved in my Dad’s absence. I recall my aunt’s disappearance after facing the sharp knife that would end her education. I recall the violence that erupted after one election period scattering us like frightened chicken.
